What is an EICR Report?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a formal assessment of an electrical system’s safety and compliance. It involves a thorough inspection and testing of wiring, circuits, fuse boards and other electrical components to identify potential hazards, deterioration or non-compliance with BS 7671 wiring regulations.

An EICR categorises issues based on their severity:

  • C1 (Danger Present) – Immediate action required due to risk of electric shock or fire.
  • C2 (Potentially Dangerous) – Urgent remedial work needed to prevent risk.
  • C3 (Improvement Recommended) – Compliance could be improved, but the installation is not unsafe.
  • FI (Further Investigation Required) – Additional testing is needed to determine the safety of an installation.

After completing an EICR, our electrical contractors provide clients around Torquay and Exeter with a detailed report outlining any necessary remedial work to bring the installation up to standard.

When is Electrical Testing Required?

Electrical safety tests are essential for compliance with safety regulations and insurance requirements. Our electricians recommend scheduling an EICR under the following circumstances:

  • Landlord Compliance: Rental properties around Torquay and Exeter must have an up-to-date EICR every five years or at the start of a new tenancy.
  • Homeowners: Testing is advised at least once every ten years, or sooner if the property is old or has undergone modifications.
  • Commercial & Industrial Premises: Businesses require an EICR every five years to comply with Health & Safety regulations.
  • After Flood or Fire Damage: Electrical testing is crucial to assess potential damage and ensure safe operation.
  • Before Property Purchase: A pre-purchase EICR provides insight into the condition of the electrical installation before committing to a property.

Why Invest in Electrical Testing?

Regular electrical testing is critical for maintaining safety, ensuring legal compliance and protecting both people and property in and around Torquay and Exeter. Key benefits of bringing in our electricians to carry out an inspection include:

  • Improved Safety – Identifies hidden faults, reducing risks of electric shocks and fires.
  • Regulatory Compliance – Ensures installations meet BS 7671 and The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • Cost Savings – Early detection of electrical faults can prevent expensive repairs and downtime.
  • Insurance Validation – Many insurers require an EICR report to maintain coverage.
  • Peace of Mind – Confirms that electrical systems are safe and fit for purpose.
